Roma Rising/Romské obrození is a photo-document by the American photographer Chad Evans Wyatt, who previously published the book 101 artists in the Czech Republic (awarded the "Best Thematic Photo Book of 2000" prize at the 2001 Prague Book Festival). RR/RO presents 100+ individuals in 87 portraits of Roma, citizens of the Czech Republic, whose education, work, professional approach, commitment and lifestyle belie the common stereotype of this ethnic group as incorrigible, forsaking the many opportunities it receives.
Apart from its artistic value (Chad Wyatt does not stylize his 'sitters' but accepts their natural surroundings, yet the final portrait is deeply thought out), the book has an enormous socio-political value and is the first of its kind. Chad Wyatt has a black father, and is therefore sensitive to the problems of minorities. These portraits of mostly unknown Roma who have achieved success and, moreover, take pride in their origins, are supplemented by their short biographies.
